Stairs Plus Chair Lift Equals Stair Lifts - A Rose by Any Other Name is Still a Rose

You can call them chairlifts, stair chairs, stair lifts, stair glides, or stairway lifts. Whatever you refer to them as, they are all the same thing - a mobility device that attaches to a flight of stairs and allows the rider to sit on a chair and be lifted up the stairs. The Mobility and Medical Industry refers to them most often as stair lifts.

There are over 7 main stair lift manufacturers with over 32 different models available on the market today in the United States. Whether for inside or outside use, curved or straight stairs, or residential versus commercial use these lifts consistently meet the needs of the consumer by transporting between floors without the use of an elevator, escalator or vertical wheelchair lift system.

However, consumers often get bogged down by industry terminology as well as industry bias. With that many models available it can be a bit overwhelming, especially if the lift is an immediate necessity. The key thing to consider when researching and purchasing stair lifts is what is the intended outcome. Since a stair lift is such a large investment, you want to be as informed as possible.

Once you have established that a loved one has the ability to use the stair lift, it is key to consider the home and which model will best serve the needs and work within the structure. Homecare Suppliers, LLC has detailed some of these common questions and factors on their Daily Living Blog with "Understanding Stair Lifts".

Cost should not be your primary factor. While it is important to understand the market and work within your budget, it is most important to get the lift that meets the users specifications.

Things to consider:

  • Can the user access the lift easily? Will they need a transfer board if they are in a wheelchair? If this is the case - the lift they use must have movable armrests.
  • Does the user have use of their right arm and hand? This is important as the controls to make the unit run are usually mounted on the right armrest. Some models allow you to put these controls on the left armrest.
  • Fear Factor - Does the unit swivel at the top of the steps, at the bottom, or both? Some riders are uncomfortable getting on a unit if it does not swivel at the top of the landing as they fear they will fall down the steps.
  • Is there a weight or height concern? Some units have a maximum lifting capacity of 300lbs. Additionally, the individuals over 6 ft sometimes need additional leg room space and thus the width of the staircase is important.

Understanding key features is also important as you make your decision.

  • Electric versus battery. There are a few manufacturers that sell an electric stair lift. However, most manufacturers sell battery run units. To clarify - battery units are not a battery back-up unit but a battery-run unit. Simply stated, a battery run unit is a unit that utilizes a battery to run and gets its recharge from an electrical outlet. These units are plugged into an outlet so that the unit is constantly receiving a trickle of electricity which keeps the battery charged. When the unit is in use, it is drawing its current from the battery, not the outlet. Should a power outage occur the unit can be used for duration of 24 - 78 hours depending upon the model purchased.
  • Worm-Drive versus Gear Driven versus Cable Driven. Each has their benefits. However one is not necessarily better than the other. Unfortunately, there is a lot of hype about one over the other, which is mostly manufacturer-driven commentaries and has little to do with functionality or durability. They are all pretty comparable when technically compared for function, safety and durability.
  • Aesthetics - Bells and Whistles. Price is often defined by the bells and whistles of the unit. Beauty, leather and upgraded features affect the price of the unit. Understand your price parameter and work from there to ensure that you are getting the best product for your particular situation.
  • Warranty. Warranties are pretty consistent in the industry with slight variables. Most units have 5 year warranty on the motor and between 1-3 years on parts and components. This is pretty standard. However, something to note is that most manufacturers do not offer a labor warranty. As a result, most dealers do not offer a labor warranty for the stair lift. To equate this to an everyday situation - if the heating element were to go out in your oven - even if it is under warranty - you still have to pay for someone to come out and diagnose the problem and do the work. The manufacturer will provide the new part, but the labor to do the repair is paid by the homeowner.
  • Self-Installation. Some manufacturers will not sell their unit uninstalled while others have designed a unit that is less complicated and can be installed by a handy individual. These manufacturers typically provide technical support via telephone to assist with trouble-shooting. A consumer can request installation manuals prior to purchase in order to ensure that they are capable of completing the installation. It is very important to find out what support is available to the consumer regarding self-installation and trouble-shooting, prior to purchasing. Further, it is important to take into consideration that some of these calls are not toll-free or within the United States.
  • Installation - Local Dealers - To find a local dealer that can both provide installation as well as sales, it is best to look in your local yellow pages book under medical supply or stair lifts. Although, purchasing local may not be the most competitive price, you often get a free consultation prior to purchase as well as a 90 day installation warranty if they install the unit for you.
  • Installation - Internet Dealers - Many internet dealers can provide the unit as well as assist with installation, however, the installation is a separate cost and may be coordinated through another company.
  • Financial Assistance - Medicare and Medicaid as well as most private insurances do not reimburse for stair lifts. A stair lift is a non-reimbursable item and is not even coded by the insurance industry with a HCPCS ('hix-pix'). Beware of dealers who state that they can get you reimbursed. Contact directly your insurance provider for written verification. Additionally, when you speak with your provider, make sure that they understand that you are inquiring about a Stair Lift not a LIFTCHAIR. Medicare and Medicaid do provide some reimbursement for the mechanical components that go into the reclining chair that also lifts an occupant - this is the stationary chair that you sit in. It is not a stair lift or chair lift.

While we know that a stair chair is a stair lift is a chair lift and a rose is a rose is a rose...it is still important that you get the exact one that best suits your needs. Every manufacturer and model is unique in their design, style and cost. We recommend comparing available models and then compiling a list of needs, financial capability and then expectations. At that point, you can then reach out to dealers and begin your comparison process and find the provider that meets your needs.

What Are the Main Differences Between Cheap and Expensive Stair Lifts?

One of the greatest inventions of modern times is the stairlift. Stair lifts are becoming increasingly popular in the modern age due to their utility and benefits. Stair lifts have restored the freedom to the disabled and elderly that they once possessed. They are now able to move about their homes with as much freedom as that of any healthy member of the family.

However, as beneficial as these stair lifts may be, they certainly are very costly, and you have to plan to invest in these stair lifts with great care. The task of choosing a stair lift that fits well in the budget and also provides all the necessary features for the needed period of time requires great consideration.

Different factors make the price of one stair lift different from the other. The most obvious factor is their design. Some stairlift designs are more expensive than others. For example, circular or round stair lifts are more expensive than straight stairlifts. Similarly, stair lifts equipped to lift heavy weights are more expensive than those designed to lift standard weights.

The quality of the material of the stair lift also affects its price. Naturally, the better the quality of material used in a stair lift, the higher would be its cost. In certain cases, better quality material can be avoided and a stair lift with cheap material would be sufficient. Better quality material ensures a long life and smooth running of the machinery and its various parts. On the other hand, a cheap stairlifts compromises durability and long life for a reduction in price.

Those who are looking for a stair lift for a short span of time are better off with a cheaper stair lift, as it would be pointless for them to buy something for short term use that has been designed for long term use. It would increase the cost of the investment without any reason.

Another difference between expensive and cheap stairlifts might be the after sales service of the company selling the stairlifts. Again, those who are concerned with long term use of the stair lift might need to worry about after sales servicing and maintenance, whereas those who intend to use them for a short span of time need not pay much heed to after sales services provided by the company.

The installation of the stair lift and the area or conditions in which it has to be installed might also create a price difference in the stairlifts. Not all stairlifts can be installed in every location, and thus more complicated stair lift designs are required to fit in tight spots. Thus, the price of these stairlifts is generally higher than that of normal stair lifts.

Expensive stair lifts generally have better finishing and more features than their cheaper alternatives. Many companies throw in a few extra features with their products to justify their higher price. Nevertheless, some of these features might actually be useful and might be among the main requirements of the consumer. Expensive stair lifts also generally provide more safety features than the cheaper alternatives available in the markets.

What Are the Alternatives For Outdoor Stair Lifts?

Stair lifts have emerged as incredibly useful machines which are of great value for old folks and those having some sort of corporal disabilities. Since the old persons and physically disabled people cannot walk up and down the stairs, stair lifts help them to move to the various floors of the house without any problem. Many times these people fall or tumble while climbing the stairs. For this reason, the creation of stair lifts is the safest and the most suitable mode of climbing stairs.

Despite the fact that old or disabled people can move to the other floor with the help of a person or a stick, however, this is certainly not an easy and safe approach. On the other hand, stair lifts let them move to the other level of the house or building without looking for the help of anyone. This freedom is one of the most important reasons people seek to buy stair lifts.

No matter if you wish to use a stair lift for personal use or commercial purpose, you can find quite a lot of models and types of these equipments which can make the life of the handicapped much more comfortable. You can find stair lifts for indoor as well as outdoor use. Both the stair lifts for indoor and outdoor purpose are a number of options. For this reason, the public places where disabled or elderly people could not go are not reachable for them with the help of these indoor and outdoor stair lifts.

The outdoor units come in enormous range with stair lifts that can be fixed at nearly any place. Apart from the size or shape of the stair case, the outdoor stair lifts can be easily fixed without any difficulty.

You can locate outdoor seated stair lift which is very comfortable to use. These are mainly meant for those who have serious physical issues and cannot even stand. However, according to some people, it is an intricate stair lift as you have to move to sit on its stair lift. You may also have to operate or require someone else to operate it.

Another type of outdoor stair lift is the standing stair lifts. You need to stand on it and you will be transported to the other floor without having to bend your knees and requiring the support of any person. One clear difference between the indoor and out door stair lifts is that the outdoor units are weather resistant while the indoor equipments are not. This is keeping in view their placement outside which needs protection from heat, light and rain etc.

Another kind of outdoor stair lift is that which can push the wheelchair to the other storey along with the person using it. Such units have an entrance, which can be locked and therefore extend maximum safety for the user.

No matter of you have to situate these outdoor stair lifts in the courtyard of your house or in some public place, you will have no concern regarding their setting up. You can find any size, and shape suiting your particular constraint.

Guide to Different Types of Stair Lifts

With the development of modern sciences, many new inventions have been introduced to the world to make life easier. Since the dawn of humanity man has always been in search of discovering different ways to make life easier - and that quest is still going on. In recent years, many new innovative machines and tools have been introduced to the market, which are specifically designed to help the disabled and allow them more freedom of movement and independence. One such innovative machine is the stair lift, which is used to help the disabled in climbing stairs without the help of another person.

There are different kinds of stair lifts to fulfil the needs of different people with different conditions and disabilities. They can be installed on almost any type of stairway, regardless of the length of the stairway. Whether the stair case is spiral or straight, a stair lift can be installed even in the most toughest spots. They are generally intended for indoor use, however there are lifts that have been specifically designed for out door use.

There are generally two main types of stair lift - standing stair lifts and seated stair lifts. Standing ones are those that can be used by people who have no problem in standing or walking but are unable, or experience difficulty in, bending their legs. These people include those with medical disorders that prevent them from bending their legs. This type of stair lift does not need a lot space to be installed and therefore can be used in tight and narrow spaces with ease. The seated stair lifts are those which are generally used by people who have a problem with standing for long periods, or are completely disabled and cannot stand at all (for example, people in wheel chairs). These stair lifts consist of a seat that runs along the stairs, thus allowing the user to climb up and down the stairs without having to stand at all. Some companies even offer seats with foldable arms to provide maximum support to the physically disabled.

Another type of stair lift is the wheelchair lift, which is designed for those people who cannot get up from their wheelchair with ease. It consists of a mechanism that transports the entire wheelchair along the stairway, thus there is no need to get up from the wheelchair at all. Yet another type of stair lift is the one called preaching stair lift which is designed for those who need just a little support while standing. It is almost the same as the standing lift but with an added support for the back of the disabled person.

It would be difficult for an ordinary person to determine which type of stair lift would be best for him/her, therefore the companies that provide stair lifts also have well trained working staff which can help the consumer choose the right stair lift for an individual. Also, it would be advisable to consult a doctor or therapist as they know the condition of the patient and will therefore be able to give a better suggestion as to which stair lift should be installed. As the stair lifts are machines, the ones with maximum warranty should be considered first to make sure the investment does not go to waste.

Stair Lifts and Electric Stair Lifts

For those elderly, disabled, or handicapped people stair lifts have been a great invention for increasing their feelings of mobility and independence. With an aging baby boomer generation, more and more properties and homes, are being built on one level. That is, without stairs for their occupants to traverse. That being said, not all aging baby boomers are moving into these types of domiciles. Many prefer to stay in the homes have lived in for years, and raised their families in. The majority of these homes, have at least one, or multiple levels of stairs. For these folks, stair lifts our a godsend.

Additionally, they also limit the demands placed on caregivers. Given the short supply of caregivers these days, that can be a very financial advantage. Stair lifts also give those unable to climb stairs, an increased sense of independence. They don't need to rely on someone else to help get them around their own home. Not to mention, stair lifts are available whenever needed, whether it be the middle of the afternoon, or the middle of the night.

Stair lifts are made up of several essential components. A seat, obviously, and some sort of steel guide or rail for moving the seat up or down the steps. There are several different types available, depending on your stair configurations. Curved staircases, will obviously need a mechanism differently, then that of a straight up and down staircase. Earlier versions of stair lifts, only ran out of AC motor. This means, that if the power goes out, stair lifts becomes inoperable. In the case of an emergency, this can be a real hazard. With technological improvements in batter technology, newer stair lifts run on both AC or DC power.

The latest models of stair lifts come equipped with various safety features and several custom options. Some come with sensors, to protect both the equipment, and the rider. If there is more than one person in the house, then it's quite simple to see where there could be problems sharing a stair lifts. If one person takes a chair up, while the other person is still on the lower floor, the person on the lower floor becomes stranded. Newer models have remote mechanisms. A couple of remotes left on each floor, resolve this dilemma.

When purchasing a stair lift, it's important not just to satisfy your own sense of safety, but to also adhere to the regulations for the area in which you live. Safety regulations for stair lifts vary by state to state. Stair lifts can be a rather complicated installation. Not necessarily for the amateur do-it-yourselfer. Therefore, it's good to ask around, and check up on many installers you may be considering.

The Importance of Stair Lifts For Seniors

For a senior, a fall can mean the loss of independence and mobility. Often due to osteoporosis, a senior's bones are much more fragile, so a low impact fall can quickly turn into a very serious injury. Of all the areas in the home, the staircase is the most frequent place for a fall and is also the most likely place to cause a serious injury among seniors.

Since the stairs are so dangerous, it is common for a senior to become anxious on the stairs, even more so if they have had a previous falls. This anxiousness can also increase the risk of a fall, which is why remaining calm is so important. The senior might also decide to simply avoid areas with stairs or to only use them when there is someone ready to help. While effective to a degree, they do not really or fully address the actual issue at hand, which is being able to use the stairs safely and with confidence. It is for this reason that the stair lift is so often used in homes and businesses across the country.

Stair lifts are a type of home lifting aid that is used to allow an individual full independent use of the stairs. The lift actually carries an individual up the stairs, most attaching directly onto the stairs. A chair or platform is used. In the case of the latter, an individual must remain standing as they use their lift, which is not as safe as the seated stair lift. Most recommend that a stair chair should be used, unless for medical reasons you need a standing stair lift.

No matter if you go with a stair chair or a standing stair lift, they will both use a tracked system. The track is first attached to the stairs, then the chair or platform moves up the track.

There are a few different types of stair lifts to choose from, but they fall into two main categories. The most common type of stair lift used is the battery powered stair life. The main advantage to using these types of lifts is that they work even if the power goes out. This is not the case with AC powered stair lifts, which get their power directly from the home. An AC powered stair lift will cost a little bit less, both in upfront costs and also recurring maintenance costs, but if the power goes out, the lift stops working. For most, the added security of a battery back-up, outweighs the extra cost.

Older battery stair lifts had actually been rather inefficient. Much like a cordless phone, they required that you parked the stair lift in a certain place in order for it to charge. If you missed the point on the track that charged the stair lift, the battery could become worn down. Today, most stair lifts use a continuously charging system, so no matter where the stair lift is on the track, it will be charging.

Stair Lift Rentals - What You Should Consider Before Renting Stair Lifts

Stair liftsrentals are recommended for those people with physical disabilities who can't afford to buy their own stair lift. It is also a great option for people who are not capable of going out of the house due to physical disabilities. However in availing stair lift rentals there are necessary factors that are needed to be considered before making the final decision.

Among these factors include the term of usage if it's for long or short term, if the user is renting for the purpose of financing option and if the stairway in the house is suitable for stair lift rentals.

With the regards to duration or terms of usage it can be both for long or short term. In most cases, the ones who rent for a short term period are those people who have experienced an accident of broken leg or hip replacement surgery. Meanwhile those who rent for a longer term period, the normal case is because of permanent physical disabilities.

If stair lift rentals are much more expensive for you it would be best to avail a financing option from the sales department of the company you have chosen for stair lift rentals. The idea is like a rent-to-own type model. This would be best for long term usage of the stair lift.

Due to varieties and complexities of staircases in some households, the most common rented stair lifts are the ones intended for straight staircases. It is also the most common offered by stair lift companies. Meanwhile, for staircases with curves or without any landing area, the difficulty to find stair lift rentals are always there.

However, if the staircases in the household is straight and yet with a landing in between, the stair lift rentals would be much more inexpensive since you can simply rent two models of stair lifts.

In availing stair lift rentals another factor to consider is the durability. Because of the idea that the device is rented it means that it is frequently used by different customers. Doing proper checking by the company before releasing to the new customers is a must.

The company should ensure that the installation of the features is secured for the new customer.

Straight Stair Lift

A straight stair lift is a powered driven stair lift that travels in a straight track. It is mostly used in homes where the stairs have no curves or bends. It is also often used in the outdoors for example the garden.

Straight stair lifts are mostly installed in homes to carry the disabled and the elderly up the straight flight of stairs. It can be used for other purposes as well such as carrying heavy loads. Examples can be grocery or heavy luggage.

Most stair lifts nowadays uses remote control that will take the chair to another floor which provides more convenience.

Before installing a straight stair lift, stair lift manufacturers will have to do an assessment of your home to determine if your home can install a straight stair lift. For instance, some straight staircases have a projection at the top of the stairs and it may not be possible to install a straight stair lift. This is particularly so if you plan to install a stair lift that lifts a wheelchair instead of the turnaround seat.

Generally speaking, a straight stair lift takes the shortest time to install and is also cheaper than curved stair lifts. The other factor that determines the cost of installing a straight stair lift is the length of the track that needs to be installed.

I would recommend if you want to install a straight stair lift to get several quotes from stair lift manufacturers or dealers if deciding. You might want to consider a second hand stair lift if you do not have the budget to buy a new stair lift since it can be expensive.

Stair Chair Lift: Factors to Consider in Buying the Right One

So you’re ready to buy your first stair chair lift. As you might already know there are many makes, models and styles. It’s enough choices to make your head spin. But, there are also individual factors to take into consideration when buying a stair chair lift. Unfortunatlely some of these considerations are overlooked by people. Here’s what to consider when buying your stair chair lift:

· Would the user of the stair chair lift rather stand or be seated as they go up and down the stairs? For people wishing to stand as they go up and down the stairwell, a perching stair lift is right for them. If they prefer to stay seated, a seated stair lift is ideal. Now if the user of the stair lift is seated in a wheelchair, then something called a wheelchair platform is what they need.

· Size is an important consideration in what type of stair lift you will buy. Obviously a stair lift fitting an adult wouldn’t be safe for a disabled child. So the seat of the stair lift you buy must fit the user right.

· If the user of the stair lift has a stiff knee, he or she will probably needs what’s called a stair chair lift that faces forward instead of sideways like most stair chair lifts are designed. Usually a wider stair chair will be more appropriate for a person with a problem knee.

· If the user of the stair chair has a problem with heights, in addition to the chair’s seatbelt, additionally guardrails might be needed to assuage the user’s anxiety.

· There are different types of controls for stair chairs. That’s important to note, because some people because of their age or condition may not be able to work the controls of a particular chair properly. So make sure you have the stair chair lift user test out the controls and get used to them before you leave them on their own.

· In cases where the user of the stair chair lift is blind or suffers poor eyesight, an appropriate chair is required. One that sounds off with an audio signal to alert the user he or she has reached the top landing or the bottom of the stairwell.

All About Stair Lift Pricing

Stair lift is perhaps one of the greatest inventions of modern technology. These stair-lifts have given back the freedom of movement to people who could not move about freely either due to some injury or old age. These sorts of stairs can be installed in almost any kind of stair cases and provides the facility to move about stairs without making an effort.

These sorts of stairs generally work like monorails and are installed either inside or outside the railing of the stair case depending on the conditions. Pricing of these sorts of stairs mainly depends on their construction, type, and conditions in which they have to be installed. There is a wide variety of stair lifts available in the market, and each provides some advantages over the others.

The main reason for so many types of stair lifts in the market is that different houses have different types of stair cases with different construction design and space allowed in which the lift has to be installed. Similarly, different consumers need different types of aids to move about the stairs, and thus different stair lifts had to be designed to satisfy the needs of wide variety of customers.

Some of the common types of stair lifts include straight rail stair lift, curved rail stair lift, wheelchair platform stair lift, outdoor stair lift, and standing platform stair lift. Thus, the price of these types of stairs also differs due to various features. For example, some outdoor stair lifts are very expensive because they are made up of a non-corrosive material and are also properly shielded to defend against changing weather conditions.

Similarly, some indoor stair lifts don't include much gadgetry and need not have powerful electric motors to support a huge weight, and are thus less expensive compared to other types of stairs which need a powerful motor to support a huge weight. Thus, the price generally depends on the type of stair lift.

Some people are only temporarily disabled, and thus don't need permanent types of stairs in their house. For such people, there are different rental types of stairs also available in the markets. These types of stairs can be rented and installed for a temporary period, and after the required period is over the stair lift is returned to the company. This is a feasible solution for people who do not need the stair lift for a long period of time.

Another option available to customers is to buy used stair lifts. With the right amount of effort you can easily find the right stair lift in a very reasonable price in the used products market. However, one downside to purchasing used types of stairs is that there is no customer support along with it, and the buyer is totally independent in deciding which stair lift to buy.

This can become problematic as the buyer might not be able to fully understand which type of stair lift would fit in his situation, and thus might end up buying something useless. However, some engineers can also be hired or the company can also be requested to make suggestions as to which stair lift should be installed, and then a similar used stair lift can be purchased.

Fixings Squeaking Stairs in Older Homes

Oh yes the common problem of squeaking stairs in an older house. This could become very frustrating and annoying as you walk up and down the stairs. There seems to be one or two stair treads that are always squeaking. That annoying sound as you walk as softly as you can on your way down to the kitchen in the middle of the night to grab a quick snack.

The number one cause of squeaking stairs is when the nails used to fasten the stair tread to the stair strainers has worked its way loose. Over time as the lumber shrinks in the stair treads and the stairs stringers. You will start to develop a separation or a gap between the stair tread and the stair strainer.

The stair stringer can shrink as much as 3/8 of an inch in just a few years. I was building a home and went to measure the stair stringer that was 11 1/2 inches wide originally. Then I measured it after two months outside in the summer sun it now measured 11 1/16". I was amazed that the lumber could shrink that much in such a short period of time.

As the stair stringer shrinks it starts to pull away from the plywood or hardwood stair tread. As it starts to separate from the stair tread the nail will stay in its original position until the stair tread starts to put pressure on the nail eventually lifting it up a little bit higher than its original position.

As you step on the stair tread the squeaking sound you hear is the nail rubbing against the stair tread. There are a few ways to fix a squeaking stair tread. If you have access to under the stairway you can apply some adhesive along with a 10 inch 2 x 4 under the stair tread and attach it to the stair stringer.

First apply adhesive to two sides of the 2 x 4. The adhesive will be used to glue the stair tread to the stair stringer. You can use screws to screw the new 2 x 4 onto the side of the stair stringer.

If you cannot access the underside of the stairs and you have carpeting you can actually locate the stair stringer and drive a 2 inch screw through the carpeting in to the stair stringer. This will pull the stair tread down and will not allow it to rub up against the nail making that awful sound of a squeaking stair case.

If you have a finished wood stair tread you will not be able to screw through it into the stair stringer without damaging the finish on tread itself. It will be easier to access the stair stringer from below somehow and apply the 2 x 4 with the adhesive to stop the stair squeak.

You can apply these methods to as many stair treads that are squeaking without taking apart the entire staircase and rebuilding it.

Used Stair Lifts - A Careful Purchase

If you have trouble traversing the stairs than a stair lift may be for you. It is no longer necessary to contemplate a move, installing an incredibly expensive personal elevator, or hiring someone to help you up and down the stairs. Stair lifts provide a safe, affordable, and easy way to use the stairs again. A stair lift, using a rail that attaches to your stairs, is a device that carries you up and down the stairs. For most people a stair lift that uses a chair to carry them up and down the steps will be the best choice. If you have trouble sitting, however, than there are some models of stair lifts that use a small platform, called a perch, to traverse the steps. The chaired stair lift is really the best choice though for most people though.

Like almost everything, it has become very easy to order stair lifts from the comfort of your own home. It is even possible to do it completely online, but do to the amount of customization that is involved in completing a stair lift order, it is probably a good idea to give them a call. A quality dealer will call up and confirm all online orders anyway, but it is always a good idea to touch bases with them. Most reputable dealers have staff standing by who will answer all your questions and help you find a stair lift that will fit your stairs and your needs. It is imperative, however, that you find a reputable dealer, though. You can still save a good deal of money on a stair lift when you purchase from a reputable dealer and some even offer refurbished models that can save you a great deal of money. It can be tempting to purchase a stair lift from a stranger, either from the newspaper or from an online auction service. For a device that will be used to carry such a valuable load up and down the stairs this is an incredibly risky gamble.

You are going to be relying on the proper and safe service of your stair lift, and by buying it used from a consumer you are very likely inheriting a problem. You have no way of knowing whether the device was installed correctly, used correctly, or if it is even in good working condition. There are many safeguards built into most stair lifts, but if the stair lift has been misused the safeguards may not be enough. The other major disadvantage of buying a used stair lift from a stranger is that it will likely not fit your stairs. The stair lift tracks must be cut to fit your specific stair case and a track that is too short or too long will be incredibly safe.

When you purchase a used stair lift from a reputable dealer you are guaranteed that you are receiving a fully functioning, tested, and refurbished unit that has passed all the factory safety tests. Even though it, a reputable dealer will still supply you with a custom cut track that will fit your stairs. Instead of taking a chance on a used stair lift from a complete stranger, make sure you buy from a reputable dealer and enjoy many years of dependable service.

Whether you are in the market for used stair lifts or a new stair lift the folks over at http://www.a1-medical-supplies.net will take good care of you. They have staff standing by to answer your questions.

Where to Buy a Used Stair Lift

When you purchase a product used you often have little recourse if it does not work. This is true of many products like used cars and used power tools, which seldom come with an extended warranty. This means that if anything happens to the product than you must pay for the repairs on your own. When you are considering purchasing a piece of home medical equipment used you have the health and wellbeing of yourself or a person you love to think of as well. Buying used items can be a gamble, but when you buy a used stair lift it doesn't have to be a gamble at all.

A stair lift is a device that moves a chair or small platform along a set of tracks that is attached to the stairs. Stair lifts, or stair chairs as they are often called, can be a very big help to people who have difficulty traversing the stairs in their home. When purchased new stair lifts are incredibly reliable and will provides many years of relatively maintenance free service. There is a large potential for abuse and misuse with these kinds of devices so you want to be incredibly careful when you buy one used, but when you buy one from a reputable dealer you can save money without worrying about the condition of your stair lift.

If you decide you wish to purchase a used stair lift, then there are several things you should look for. It is possible to save a good deal of money this way, but you can't just buy them from anyone. First ensure that you are purchasing the stair lift from a reputable dealer. If you make the mistake of buying a used stair lift from an individual you have absolutely no assurance that the device was used, maintained, and assembled properly. With a device that carries the great responsibility that a stair lift does, several times a day up and down the stairs, then you do not want to take any chances. A reputable dealer that carries used stair lifts will thoroughly inspect, refurbish, and then test all products before they ever leave their door. In addition to a warranty of at least 6 months, you are guaranteed that your stair lift will be in the same condition as if it was brand new. This guarantee of course only applies to used stair lifts bought from reputable dealers.

When you purchase a used stair lift from a reputable dealer, you are getting a completely refurbished unit that is like a new model. The other great advantage of buying a used stair lift from a reputable dealer is that the dealer will custom fit your stair case with a set of rails. This will save you money and ensure that your stair lift will be a safe addition to your home. When you purchase a used stair lift from an individual there is a good chance you will need to order or cut your own track. This is because everyone's stair case is a little different, so it is very unlikely that you will find someone who had a stair case that has the same dimensions as yours.

A stair lift is a big investment that has a lot riding on it. Rather than take a chance by buying a used stair lift from a private individual, you should seek a quality distributor of used stair lifts. By finding a reputable dealer you will ensure that your used stair lift is as new as if it had just left the factory.

Brad Brubaker has years of experience in the home medical equipment field. http://www.a1-medical-supplies.net is a reputable dealer of used stair lifts and more. Visit their site or give them a call to find out more.

Building Deck Stairs on a Budget - By Richard Truckner / Leslie ...

As a professional, I’ve built many decks of all sizes and shapes. Stairs are often the last part of the deck to be tackled because they are usually the most difficult and expensive part of the deck to build. However, by using a method known as the ‘engineered bracket system’, not only can I save up to $500 per flight of wood stairs, but the installation is easy, with professional results.

The adjustable stair bracket system automatically adjusts to the exact rise and run needed. The customized rise and treads configurations can be adjusted to meet all building codes for any interior or exterior application. The brackets act as joist hangers which allow the stair risers to be used structurally, carrying the load across the stair like floor joists. Using only two outside stringers, the stair width can be up to nine feet wide and the stairs are strong. The need for interior stringers is eliminated. The outside stringers then require only 3 to 4 cuts each, and the risers and treads are simply attached to the brackets. If you make a mistake, you can readjust the brackets.

A wide range of materials such as redwood, cedar, tropical wood, treated wood, untreated wood, vinyl, steel, and composites can be used. Adjustable brackets allow for customized rise and tread configurations which can be adjusted to meet all building codes for any interior or exterior application.

This is how it works: Set the brackets on the two 2×6 stringer members using the spacers and pivot screws. Remove spacers and rotate brackets to adjust stair height. Fix brackets in position, attach risers and treads. 3D video demos are available on the website below.

Before you begin, determine the material you are going to use, the exact number of steps you need and the stair width.

You will need (2) 2×6’s per stringer for each side. Make sure when you purchase your 2×6’s make sure that they are straight without any twist. The 2×6’s will need to be at least 12″ longer than the total length of your stairs. Two stringers are sufficient to span up to 7′ wide (exterior stair requirements).

For risers you will use 2×8’s for riser heights up to 7-1/4″ and 2×10’s for higher risers. For treads you can use 2×12’s (which is the easiest option). However, if you decide to use (2) 6 inch wide treads instead…wood or composite, you will need to use cleat brackets to bridge between the risers for tread support. Time saving tip: when you determine how many steps you will need and your stair width….get all your risers and treads pre-cut to exact lengths when you purchase the materials.

Tools/Materials needed will be: a power drill, saw (skill saw is preferable, but not required, #8 1 1/4″ Phillips flat head or star/square drive screws for the stair brackets, #8 2 1/2″ deck screws for every 9″ of tread and riser connection and Spacers for customized riser and tread measurements.

The “Engineered Stair Bracket System” method eliminates the need to cut stringers and is tested to be much stronger and faster than conventional construction. Whether you’re a seasoned professional or a do-it-yourselfer, you will build fast, strong and accurate stairs, on a budget.

EZ Stairs is the only adjustable, engineered stair bracket system available anywhere, ICC approved. It won Pro Sales Magazine’s Editor’s 2004 Choice award for new product innovation in construction. EZ Stairs’ composite deck stairs compatibility solution was chosen for LBM Journal’s ‘Hot Products’ Award at the 2005 and 2008 International Builders Show. Easy installation, strong and professional. The system is engineered so that even someone with minimal building skills, can build stairs easily, and pros can just build faster- equaling more profit. Summit Stair Lifts - For Those On A Budget

A home stair lift can give someone back their house and independence. But stair lift prices can be very high and beyond the reach of many. Some stair lift manufacturers make money by selling their products that have 'many features'. Having a plethora of features may be good for some people but many who really need a stair lift have a very small budget. Summit specializes in making no-fuss cheap stair lifts that are reliable.

Although Summit stair lifts are considerably cheaper than other brands you still get many features as standard. The most important of these features are the safety systems on the stair lift. The Summit stair lift comes with constant-pressure controls to stop the lift the instant the control is released. There are limits that ensure the carriage will stop at both the top and bottom of the stairs. And, like most top brands of stair lifts, there are sensors on the footrest to stop the carriage if any obstacles are encountered.

Unlike most other brands the Summit stair lift uses a cable system, rather than a rack and pinion one, to move the chair along the rack. Most companies feel that rack and pinion gives a smoother ride, especially when starting and stopping. This is possibly true but rack and pinion stair lifts need to be cleaned and lubricated regularly to prevent damage to the components. Cable systems require far less maintenance.

Also, the cable used in the Summit stair lift is aircraft cable rated for 4,200 lbs. This means the chair can carry a maximum weight of 350 lbs - the more costly Stannah stair lift can carry a maximum load of less than 300 lbs.

All in all, the cable system used in the Summit stair lift might not give you the perfectly smooth ride but it needs less attention and can carry a hefty load.

The Summit stair lift operates on standard household AC current, 115 VAC, 15 AMP minimum grounded circuit. Most stair lifts on the market today use DC rechargeable batteries. Again, the argument is that DC power gives smoother starts and stops than does AC electric power. This may be true, but there are also disadvantages to battery units. They need to be replaced every so often - there isn't this additional expense with an AC mains powered stair lift. Also, rechargeable batteries need charging after about 20 round trips of the stairs. If a stair lift is going to be used many times during the day or if more than one person will be using it, then AC mains powered stair lifts really are the better option.

The simple design of the Summit stair lift makes it easy to install, even someone with basic DIY skills is supposed to be able to fit one. However, it is always recommended that a customer never self-installs a stair lift.

Apart from the ride being a little less smooth than other brands, are there any other drawbacks?

Well, today there is quite a large market in used stair lifts. Later, should you want to sell your stair lift, you'll find that it may not be in so much demand as other used stair lifts.

You won't get many of the extras that are available with more expensive stair lifts, even if you request them. For instance, you only get a manual swivel seat; you can't get a motorized one like you can with a Stannah stair lift. You can't get the range of safety belt options like some other brands. The look of the Summit stair lift is very basic, but if you're on a budget, how it looks, won't be top of your list of requirements.

Many consumer reviews of stair lifts concur that the Summit stair lift may not be the best of the market in terms of style or functionality but it's as safe as others however the price of the Summit stair lift is its biggest selling point.

Stair Lift Measuring - How To Take Proper Measurements To Install A Stair Chair Lift

Thinking about buying and installing your own stair lift? In today’s internet market, the trend is moving towards customer friendly products. Manufactures are developing and producing products that a typical consumer or homeowner can install with standard household tools in just a few hours.

The first step all stair lift manufactures require from the customer or homeowner before a product is made and shipped are the measurements of the staircase. It is very easy to measure for your new stair lift. All you need is a good quality tape measure to get the job done.

Before you begin to measure, take a general overview of your stairway layout and decide which side of the staircase the stair lift will be mounted on, when viewed from the bottom. Typically, stair lifts can be installed on either side of the staircase. Depending on the layout, choose the best side where it will be the easiest to get on and off the lift avoiding any obstacles at the top or bottom.

Most stair lifts mount to the staircase tread and not the wall. So no walls are necessary for most stair lift designs. Make sure you understand the manufactures design to ensure this is the case.

Now that you have decided which side of the staircase the stair lift will be mounted, follow the steps below to take proper measurements. Always measure twice. All measurements should be recorded in inches.

The following 7 measurements are required to determine if a stair lift application will work for your mobility needs.

1. Overall Length - This is the MOST IMPORTANT measurement! This determines the length of rail you will need for the lift. To obtain this measurement stand at the top of your stairs, extend your tap measure until it is laying on all the stair treads and the tip of the tape measure is touching the landing at the bottom of the steps. How many inches is it from the bottom landing to the top of the upper landing? Document this number.

2. Top Stair to Bottom Stair - Measure from the edge of the top step to the edge of the bottom step.

3. Width - Measure the width of your staircase from wall to wall or inside width of the staircase. In many cases this will be wall to wall.

4. Bottom Clearance - If there is a wall or a door at the bottom of the steps, place the beginning of the tape measure at the beginning of the door frame or wall and extend out until you reach the bottom of you step wall. Note: This should be done if you have a wall (landing) or door at the top of the steps as well and add a number eight (8) measurement and mark that as the "top clearance".
The last three measurements (5, 6, and 7) will enable the manufacturer to preset the seat angle of your lift at the factory.

5. Rise of ONE STEP - Measure the height of one stair. This is from the base of one tread to the next.

6. Tread of ONE STEP - Measure the width of one step. This is the area you walk on. Measure from the front of the step to the back of the step.

7. Diagonal of ONE STEP – Measure the length from one edge of a step to the tip of the next. Similar to step 1 but instead of the entire staircase length, only measure the length between two steps.

Great, now that you have completed the hardest part of determining if a stair lift will work in your home, the next step is to find a stair lift company to ship your product. If you would like more details on How To Measure a staircase please feel free to read more at the above link.
